Plastic Challenge – Week One

The start of a typical morning creates an unexpected plastic challenge.

I pull out Cooper’s harness, leash, and a poop bag. Suddenly, I am faced with my first plastic challenge – a plastic poop bag. Wow – the thought hits me… maybe I am more dependant on plastic than I think.  I walk Cooper at least twice a day if not 3 or 4 times a day AND he poops at least twice.  That’s about 730 plastic poop bags. WOW – that’s a lot of plastic. To put this into perspective I did a really quick search – it is estimated there are 69,926,000 domestic dogs in the US alone.  If every one of these dogs poops twice a day and it is picked up with a plastic bag that is approximately 138 million plastic poop bags add to landfills each year. Yikes!  That’s a whole lot of poop in plastic bags.

So what am I going to do with Cooper’s poop?  Hum? As of today, not sure.  By the end of the week, I plan to have some information to make an educated decision.

My research buddy, Google, and I will team up to hit it hard.  I will let you know what we come up with to address the issues and the possible solutions.  Off the top of my head, I can think of 4 or 5 issues to consider.  Hopefully, there are reasonable solutions that will help solve them.

Cooper and I will test some options.

My goal is to implement a solution that meets several needs:

  • less plastic
  • easy to use
  • reasonable cost
  • some degree of convenience
  • addresses the entire issue

And so the challenge begins!
